ASIST in England

Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training

ASIST has been developed over many years in Canada and was introduced to England in December 2003 by Lewes and Wealden Mind. Since this initial evaluation course, we have hosted two training for trainers courses training 30 instructors and delivered (or helped deliver) a total of 57 ASIST workshops to 890 people drawn from a wide range of different groups, including Primary Care Trust workers, Police officers from Sussex Police, Royal Navy sailors, GPs, Counsellors and many others. We have also built links across the region and the country, delivering 3 workshops in the North East and 4 in London. We have been supported by funding from the South East Development Centre and National Mind and have established partnerships with HM Prison Service, Southwark PCT, the Royal Navy and many others.

We have exciting plans for the future, including a third Training for Trainers course in January, the introduction to the UK of a new training programme called Safe Talk that compliments ASIST and the development of English training materials and videos.
