About Us

Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training

ASIST Trainers are people who are committed to reducing the incidence of suicide in our communities. We are trained to train ordinary people with the skills to intervene and prevent a suicide happening.

Suicide is still difficult to talk about and most people still "keep their fingers crossed" that they will never come across, or have to deal with a suicidal person. We know that many of these people are people like you. Suicide can become an option for anyone, without notice, and can occur when no one imagined or wanted to believe it would really happen. It is the saddest cause of death because it is very often preventable. It also causes untold and lifelong distress to the many others who survive the loss of someone through suicide and wish they had done something! If more ordinary people in our community can understand the reasons for suicide, recognise the signs, know that they can have support, and can develop the confidence to believe they can be someone who can help, some of the suicides that might happen otherwise in the future, won't happen.

Our mission is to teach others the basic "first aid" skills that help someone to decide to stay alive until they can either find the help they need themselves, or can be encouraged to be helped by the professional services. You can help that happen. If you are interested in learning the skills that can then help a distressed person find alternative solutions to suicide then you should do ASIST because ASIST has been developed to
help you to work in a safe way.
